So after it had thoroughly gotten under my skin, I had to go look it up.
A few things. First of all. There is something just wrong with Ken's dance moves.
Second, I am not sure if Barbie, who had made some progress in recent years (when Barbie's skirts got longer and she got a job) is heading in the right direction here. Life in plastic, it's fantastic?
Third, the back story here is incredible. The original song was created by a one-hit wonder Danish pop band called Aqua. When it came out, Mattel sued them over the use of the Barbie trademark in their song. The case dragged on for more than 6 years and almost went all the way to the Supreme Court (some things never cease to amaze...). But it was tossed out. Aqua could keep their song.
That was about seven years ago. But last year, Mattel licensed the song, changed some of the more risque lyrics and put it in a Barbie commercial.
Again, some things never cease to amaze me. This is one of them.
