Transitioning from the Crib to the "Big Boy Bed"

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you saw me talking a whole lot about bedding and beds this weekend.  Nope, sorry, nothing quite as scintillating as that sounds.  It was a combination of unrelated things.  First, it's finally getting warm enough here in Minnesota to tuck away the flannel sheets and to get out the good old cotton ones.  Yeah, when you live in the great northern tundra and sleep in flannels 3/4 of the year, that is cause for celebration.

But more importantly, it was time to move Elijah from his crib to the "big boy bed."

Both Caleb and Noah moved earlier than Eli did.  Caleb out of necessity.  We wanted to move him before there was ever cognition that his parents were too thrifty to buy a second crib his brother was coming and needed his crib.  So he moved to a big bed at about 18 months.  And Noah was just ready to move at about 17 months.

We've been talking about the move to the big boy bed for a few weeks.  And half of the time Eli was excited and the other half, we would get a big "NO."

However, we are not big on gradual transitions here.  Our philosophy (or lackthereof) is to just move along.  Not make a big deal either way about things.  So he napped today in his crib.  He woke up, we took the crib apart.  And tonight, the big boy bed was in its place.

Here's how it went.

A crib came down.

In its place, a big boy bed went up.
A little boy was excited.  And instead of insisting on more books, like he usually does, after one he turned to me and said, "Big boy bed?"

Off he went.

Like he'd been doing this all along.

He asked for covers.
And a kiss from Mom and Dad.
(and no, Brian is never allowed to take a photo of me from this angle)

And within minutes he was asleep.
And while there were moments today when I was bittersweet about the end of an era.  Or really, the end of three eras.  This is what it was all about.  Celebrating where we are.  Not dwelling on the process.  But on the moment.

And so tonight that is where I am.  Celebrating the moment.

Good night.  Sleep tight.  Don't let the bed bugs bite.
