Our Afternoon at the Los Angeles Food Bank

What a day!

I have now been awake for 23 hours.  If you know me, you know I don't really do that.  And when I do, it's not graceful or pretty.  But here I am.

But what a day.  A brief synopsis.

Rain in Minneapolis = delay in Minneapolis.

That = pretty much going to miss my connection in Chicago.

However...rain in Chi-town = a delay there.  Yeah, I am going to make my flight and going to get my suitcase.  That also meant I got to connect with Tamara from Unexperienced Mom.  (And my arm looks huge because it's a self portrait, I haven't let myself go that much!)

We finally got to LA to meet up with the rest of the group and headed to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for a tour and group activity.

We toured the facility first.  Amazing.  Huge.  And, given the enormous need, you understand why the facility is equally large.

Granted Minneapolis/St. Paul is a decent sized community, but clearly LA is huge.  The number of people that this food bank serves is amazing.

I was particularly impressed with their dedication to providing fresh foods.

In total, this this Food Bank serves more than 1 million people in Los Angeles each year.  With just 50 volunteers a day.

Needless to say, we were all impressed and moved by all we saw and learned.

They had us work as a team to assemble nearly 180 backpacks.  These backpacks go to children who are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs at their schools.  While they have the chance to receive 1-2 meals a day at school, the weekends are another story.  Each child who is eligible will take home a discreet backpack each weekend filled with enough food for the weekend.

We ended the day with a gathering for all of the blogging correspondents, the team and friends.  The restaurant tried to sell us a photo, but that seemed silly, so here is a photo of a photo...

Tomorrow we head to the set of Desperate Housewives for the national kickoff.  More to come.  Be sure to follow me on Twitter for live tweets during the event.

I am honored to be a blogging correspondent for ConAgra Foods during this campaign.  As such, ConAgra has provided me with background, information and a stipend to cover some of the costs I will incur.  The words and beliefs are mine.
