A Kid's View on Being Green

What does it mean to be green?  My kids were recently asked to share what it meant to be "green" on reusable tote bags they were given to decorate at school.

Noah
Be the Lorax.
Don't pollute.

Nice.  Simple, clear and to the point.

Caleb's, however, took a bit more explaining.

Caleb
(translation: Join the Worms Team, Not the Cigarette Team.)

I had to ask him what he meant by that.

And as he spoke, what came out was a variety of things.

First, he talked about how worms eat dirt and recycle it.  He thought that was cool.  Like the most basic form of recycling.  They didn't waste.

Then he shared that cigarettes are bad for not only you but also for the environment because he sees so many people just throwing them out the window and littering and maybe causing fires.

Third, he commented that he also worried about the worms, because, what if you throw a cigarette out the window and it's still lit and it lands on a worm?  You might not only be hurting yourself and the environment, but the worm, too.

So there you go.  Your Friday tips for being greener.

1. Be the Lorax.
2. Don't pollute.
3. Don't toss your cigarette butts out the window.
4. Consider recycling dirt.  However you can.
5. Don't kill worms.  Especially with lit cigarettes.
